We've Moved On.

I posted the last of our graphing project. You can see them after this post. We are working with the element of color and students are designing abstract pieces using warm or cool color schemes. Today we had to leave the classroom third period because of the strong smell from the enamel paint we're using for the huge letters that will be placed out on the back hill. There are 8 or 9 letters complete. Once those are finished Mr. Morgan will build the frame and they'll be ready to go into place. I'm photographing the entire process so everyone can see what's going on.

Graphing Magazine photos

Using a Renaissance technique of griding the subject, art students completed their unit of study on Value and shading with a large 12X18 drawing using magazine photos as their subject. We had amazing results using this technique. Hope you enjoy!

Kuna Women and their Molas

My Aunt Alexa passed away October 14th and my parents traveled to Michigan to be with my Uncle Claude and his family during the funeral. While there my uncle gave my mother a fabulous collection of Molas made by the Kuna women of Panama. There is amazing artistry in the traditional mola. Mola designs are often inspired by modern graphics as well as themes from Kuna legends and culture. Geometric molas are the most traditional, having developed from ancient body painting designs. Molas begin as a blouse worn by the Kuna woman. Kuna women wear the blouses until they tire of them and then take them apart and sell them to collectors. I'll have the three molas on display next week that my mother donated to the art department for exhibit. Thank you Uncle Claude for sharing this wonderful collection with us!

Crazy Days

Things seem to be a bit nuts for us right now. We had our field trip last week, honors English classes were gone today on a field trip plus the ASVAB test was given to the juniors today so classes were a bit mixed up. We're in the process of completely our graphing project so once that is finished I'll be posting some of that work. Next week we begin our Trash Sculptures. All of our pieces will need to be in by Dec. 1.
I told the kids this week that we're going dumpster diving to see what we can recycle for our sculptures. Just kidding though. I don't think any of us has the nerve to climb in one of those nasty things.
